Most visitors to the largest annual public event in Leeds's twin city of Lille in France would welcome Britain back in the European Union as soon as possible.

At least that is the conclusion of campaign group Leeds for Europe, which this weekend had its first-ever stall at "La Grande Braderie de Lille" - Europe's largest flea market.

The event is held each year on the first Saturday and Sunday of September. Typically, it attracts 10,000 stallholders and more than three million visitors. Leeds for Europe was there both days.

Its stall was organised independently of Leeds City Council. Leeds and Lille have been twinned for more than 50 years - renewing that relationship post-Brexit with a new signing ceremony in March 2022.

Among five members of Leeds for Europe who travelled to Lille to man the stall was the group's Chair, Richard Wilson.

Mr Wilson said: "We were there to make friends and promote Leeds as the kind of friendly, inclusive and a still unashamedly European city that Lille itself can be proud to be linked with.

"The welcome we got was as warm as the weather. It's always good to visit a place like Lille to reaffirm that British politicians and media elite who talk about animosity between ordinary British and French folk like us are just talking out of their …er, derriere!"

Street stalls Leeds for Europe regularly organises - most often at Briggate in Leeds city centre - include a "Brexitometer". This is a flipchart with questions about politics and Brexit-related issues that passers-by can share their views on.

The group had a French language version for Lille. One question asked was whether the UK would be welcome back into the EU.

Richard Wilson said: "The result was an emphatic 'oui'."

MEPs and Lille politicians visiting the Leeds for Europe stand included First Deputy Mayor Audrey Linkenheld, who also reiterated how keen most people are to see Britain back in the EU.
